How Lee R Uses SmartShade and SmartThings to Automate His Home

When you’re putting together your very own Smart Home, it’s important to have all your devices work together.

Communication in the Smart Home space can be a little tricky. There are quite a few different communication protocols without a clear standard (yet).

Names like WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and even Z-Wave, get tossed around a lot. It can be hard to pick the right products to make sure they work together.

Luckily for Lee, he made the right choice when picking the first-generation version of SmartShade, the AXIS Gear, and Samsung SmartThings.

We found out how Lee is making his home smarter after he left a 5-star review of Gear on our website.

This is what he had to say:

“Makes automating windows easy. Integrated this into my SmartThings easily and automated them on a schedule.”

Lee even took this fantastic photo of his set up:

Let’ dive deeper into Lee’s review to better see how he uses SmartShade and SmartThings to automate his home.

Makes Automating Windows Easy

Lee kicks off his review by mentioning how Gear makes automating his windows easy.

Believe it or not, with all the smart home products out in the world today, products for smart blinds are few and far between. Let alone, products that transform your ordinary blinds into smart blinds.

This exactly why we often hear our customers say “finally I can add smart blinds to my smart home!” when they first discover us and it is exactly why we created RYSE SmartShade in the first place.

We believe it should be easy for everyone and anyone to upgrade the window blinds they already own and love.

SmartThings Integration & Partnership

Back in 2019, AXIS Gear became officially certified with Samsung SmartThings.

This collaboration was the result of a lot of hard work between the Samsung team and our team, and as you can see with Lee’s review, it was very much worthwhile.

Samsung SmartThings is a hugely popular smart home system and it now has it’s first retrofit motorized shading device in it’s growing family of connected devices.

How Lee Uses The SmartThings Integration

Lee mentions that its easy to integrate Gear with his SmartThings (more on the actual steps just below).

From there he simply automates them on a schedule to fit his particular routine and preferences.

But doesn’t AXIS have it’s own schedule feature?

Great question!

Yes, the official AXIS app does have a very powerful scheduling feature.

However, some customers with lots of different Smart Home products prefer to use one app to control all of them. This way they aren’t opening up a bunch of different apps to make adjustments.

Think of using a hub, like SmartThings, the same way as people use universal remote controls.

It can be quite frustrating sifting through remote after remote to get the job done!

To connect AXIS Gear to your SmartThings hub:

If you own an AXIS Gear and Samsung SmartThings and would like to join Lee in automating his home, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the SmartThings app
  2. Tap the + Icon
  3. Select “Add device”
  4. Scroll and find the “AXIS” logo
  5. Select the “Window Treatment” category and follow the on-screen instructions

After connecting Gear to your SmartThings hub, you can enjoy an ever-growing amount of integrations from products such as:

  • Google Assistant and Google Home and Google Nest family of devices
  • Amazon Alexa and Amazon Echo family of devices
  • Samsung Bixby
  • Philips Hue lights
  • ecobee Thermostats
  • Ring Doorbells
  • August Smart Locks

Combining smart blinds with a smart home hub like SmartThings is an express ticket to having the smartest home in your neighborhood.
